When I think about the phrase Personal Expression, what comes to my mind is the freedom to share some part of my life. It wouldn't be wise to distil every aspect of my life, in fact, I don't even think it's even possible, nor to speak of intelligent. But, it's possible, I believe, to share with the world what I think about certain topics; about my beliefs, my inclinations and passions, and the skills or competencies that I have. I believe it's necessary to share with the world what I make and allow myself to be vulnerable to critiques. Doing all of this, and perhaps more, is what I term personal expression.
When I was in the first decade of my life, from when I was born to when I was ten years old, I was REALLY passionate about building. I built/constructed toys with whatever I could find: plastic bottles, wood, brooms, cartons, hard-board etc., whatever I could get my hands on. (One time, I used my elder sister's cake pan to construct a tricycle.) My colleague, then, was my cousin-brother. We constructed a lot of things, from houses to aeroplanes to ships. Mehn, was I so alive!
It is often stipulated that when you grow older you tend to lose your childlike spark. You disconnect from the love and passions that excited you. You consider them to be but childish or youthful exuberance. Nothing exceptionally useful for the future you're training to participate in. But, is that actually true?
I mean, if I think about my life and the things I am currently doing, I discover that that spark and remarkable interest to build hasn't actually left me. I still want to build, just on a more mature, valuable and sophisticated level: I want to build tools that will be useful to me and to other people. I want to change the narrative of my world and the people in it. I want to build, not alone, but with a team of people intelligent and gifted. We don't leave the passions of childlike simplicity behind, we use it as a guide, an inspiration to foster our progress moving forward.
It is always a remarkable experience to seek personal expression. It is imperative that we find ways to ventilate. And that has to be in dynamic, creative ways that make meaning to you. I hope you do.
